Gratitude and Need: How Our Community Is Stepping Up — and Why We Still Need You

One recent weekday, a big blue pickup truck pulled up to the curb outside the Mountain Resource Center lobby. A couple came in and quietly told our receptionist, Lori, that they wished to make an in-kind donation to our Food Share Market. They didn’t want recognition — they simply wanted to help their neighbors.

Lori led them to our community space, where every incoming donation is weighed. Tracking food donations by weight helps us maintain transparency for grant reporting, informed decision-making, and long-term planning. When all was said and done, this generous couple had brought in more than 700 pounds of food — all purchased and donated directly from their hearts.

While this was an especially large donation, it’s far from an isolated act of kindness. “I have been moved to tears several times this week by the generosity of our community,” Lori shared. “I’ve even seen people donating who I know don’t have much to spare themselves.”

The response to the ongoing national food access crisis has been humbling and inspiring. Each contribution — whether a single bag of groceries or a large community food drive — makes a difference for our neighbors facing food insecurity.

But the need continues to grow. Even before the suspension of SNAP benefits, our Food Share programs saw a 17% increase in customers from September to October — following a 52% budget cut in January. Demand is rising while resources are shrinking.

We are deeply grateful for every person who has stepped forward with compassion and generosity. Your kindness sustains our mission. Yet, even with the resumption of SNAP benefits, this crisis is far from over — and we still need your help to keep food on every table in our mountain community.

Please, if you can, continue to support MRC’s Food Share programs with food donations, financial gifts, or by organizing food drives. Together, we can ensure that no one in our community will go hungry.
