Event Summary:
The History of the Empty Bowls Concept
Empty Bowls events are held by Food Banks across the country. Designed to raise awareness about the problem of hunger in our nation and as well as in our local communities, these meals typically offer a simple fare of soup and sandwiches and often feature the work of local artists who have donated works themed around the Empty Bowls Concept which is to raise money to help organizations fight hunger, to raise awareness about the issues of hunger and food security, and to help bring about an attitude that will not allow hunger to exist. Our event’s goal is to raise awareness about the issue of hunger in our mountain area community and the event will provide our neighbors two ways in which they may support the cause: 1) Empty Bowls Lunch at MRC; 2) Empty Bowls Supper at MRC; 3) Empty Bowls Lunch at the Lake House and/or Empty Bowls Dinner at the Lake House. This hunger is not limited to food, as we all are “hungering” for something. This may manifest itself in the need for food, clothing, referral information, healthcare, parenting and nutrition classes and financial assistance. The mission of Mountain Resource Center is to answer that need to be fed. We hope you will assist in these efforts.
The central theme of the event is the idea of a simple meal of soup and bread are offered to guests as well as the empty bowls which are our gift for your $25 donation. Attendees will choose from a selection of soups, breads and desserts donated by local restaurants and caterers. All proceeds from ticket sales will go directly to providing food and support services for at-risk mountain residents.
