Taking Care of the Caregiver is a Preventative Step:
It is important to recognize that taking on a caregiver role can be very challenging and stressful. Taking care of your own needs is the best way to manage the stress. Make it a priority to schedule time for yourself and be sure to follow through. Don't neglect the important relationships in your life. Do activities that relieve the pressure and bring enjoyment to your life. Get help from friends and other family members. No person should care for another adult alone. Respite care or additional in-home services may give you and loved ones a needed break. Call for assistance before you become frustrated, impatient or exhausted. Listen to those who care about you when they make suggestions. Explore options and
legal decisions with your loved one and prepare an agreed upon plan if and when their abilities have
declined. Locate all helpful resources before they are needed.
