Mountain Resource Center’s 9-1-1 Call

Tucked in the shadows of the middle-class neighborhoods and million dollar estates of our mountain communities are
the not-so-cozy cabins and heavily weathered houses of neighbors who can’t afford to pay their utility bills, heat
their small spaces, or put three meals a day on the table. The car isn’t reliable, they don’t have health insurance
and dental care isn’t possible. The sad stories from our own backyard convey desperate needs that are real:
•He’s hit me for the last time. I’m afraid to stay, but what can I do to stop him and where can I go for help?
Mountain Resource Center assisted 579 Domestic Violence Victims in 2007.
•I never thought it would come to this – I have always taken care of my family. But we can’t make ends meet anymore. We had to let go of our health insurance, Bob’s medical problem has cost him hours at work, and now he needs surgery. The kids are sick, but I can’t take them to the doctor. What are we going to do?
Mountain Resource Center helped 462 residents with health services in 2007
•There isn’t any food in the house and I can’t pay the electric bill this month. I lost my job and don’t have any savings. It’s so cold, how am I going to make it through this winter?
Mountain Resource Center provided Family Support assistance to 2,114 adults and their children
•Being a stay-at-home Mom is lonely on our isolated dirt road. I don’t know any other mothers with toddlers, my husband works long hours, and I don’t have family here. I feel like a prisoner in my own house and my son has terrible tantrums.... what can I do?
Mountain Resource Center enrolled 598 in parent/child classes during 2007
The slow economy of 2008 is bringing a 20% increase in numbers of families needing assistance through Mountain Resource Center’s doors. It is a door that we seek to keep wide open for all, but every month we regretfully have to close the door on someone’s hope because the budgeted money runs out. The coming winter will be a hardship for many at-risk neighbors. The median income in Evergreen and Conifer alone is about $86,000 and yet, of the 911 households receiving aid through MRC’s Family Support and Health Services in 2007, 66% reported earning less than $20,000 per year, 19% reported an income between $20,000 - $30,000, and 6% reported income between $30,000 - $40,000 per year. This means that 91% fell at or below the Self-Sufficiency Standards for Jefferson and Park counties and needed emergency aid.
We are making a 9-1-1 Call out to you on behalf of your neighbors in need: Donating to MRC is an efficient and effective way to help the over 4,000 people who will walk through our doors seeking hope and needing HELP this year. We can take care of our own and support neighbors towards self-sufficiency, if each of us who are able will help today. The goal is to raise a minimum of $30,000 by the end of October.
“It is every man’s obligation to put back into the world at least the equivalent of what he takes out of it”.
